2nd Annual Run To Send A Girl To School

Due to the success of last year’s 5K run/walk fundraising event and by popular demand we are bringing back the 5K run this year with a twist. This year’s 5K (with a 10K option) will be a virtual run due to unavoidable circumstances that prevent the Executive Team from organizing a local running event.

Last year’s run netted $6187 towards the sponsorship of Girls in Rural Ethiopia. Our goal this year is to raise $10000 for the same purpose.

Q: Why does Dir Biyabir sponsor girls in Ethiopia?

Dir Biyabir is a registered non-profit founded in 2006 to mobilize financial and human resources, for the specific purpose of supporting local grass-roots development projects in the poorest areas of Ethiopia. One of Dir Biyabir’s focus is expanding educational opportunities in rural areas by sponsoring girls to go to school. There are many girls who are eager to attend school but are unable to afford even basic school material as they are either orphaned or have parents who cannot afford the expense. Traditionally families prioritize boys over girls in providing educational opportunities, so Dir Biyabir places a special focus on supporting girls to go to school. Q: What is a virtual race?

A: A virtual race is where participants sign-up to walk, jog or run 5K/10K on their own at the location of their choice. Runners will be responsible to time their run and report the time to the race organizers. Once all registered participants complete their chosen distance, the race organizers announce the winners and send out a certificate of completion to all and prizes to the top three winners in each category. Runners can complete the 5k or 10k anytime between August 1^st and October 31^st .

We encourage you to Post pictures of your run on the event’s Facebook page or tweet and #dirbiyabirvirtualrun #runtosendagirltoschool. Every week the Dir Biyabir team will choose a picture and the person who posted/tweeted will get a gift certificate.

Q: How much does it cost?

A: The registration amounts are as follows

· Kids 5K/10K (Age group 0 – 17) $15

· Adult 5K Run/Walk $40

· Adult 10K Run/Walk $50

Family Signup ( 2 adults and 2 kids) $80

· Or donate any amount without running

Q: How much of this will go to send a child to school?

A: All the registration fees and donations will go straight to project beneficiaries. All administrative costs will be covered by the board.

Q: What do runners get for finishing the race?

A: Top three finishers by category:· Gift certificates
